Baroque Art Assignment
The only women that worked as a painter in Portugal during the seventeenth century was Josefa de a Ayala. She used to meet with clients, travel, and manage businesses. She became well-known after her death in 1684; Portugal artist celebrated her originality of a female artist.
Christ Child as Salvator Mundi by Ayalas
The painting above is one of the creations Ayalas finished before her death. It is a painting of Christ when he was a child. He appears to be standing on an pedestal. He is looking directly as the viewer of this painting, and is making the sign of the cross with his right hand. He is holding a flag and orb with his left hand. He has a crown of flowers which has a halo above it. A mantle is on his back, and his body appears to be covered in a thin lace. The background of the painting is black, which allows Christ to stand out quite a lot. The lighting caused this painting to have the Baroque style to it.
I would be honored to have this painting in my house, especially since my family is Catholic. It shows how powerful Christ was, even as just a young child.
One of The Council of Trent made sure to display appropriate painting since protesters were against the catholic practices such as "such as touching, kissing, and talking to images." I believe Ayalas piece of art had appropriate displays.

I like how you chose an artist from the baroque era that wasn't as well known as others. I find this piece to be a very interesting depiction of christ as a child, as it is far from how I have thought he would have looked like.
ReplyDeleteI liked the connection you made to the Council of Trent. Did you know that the artist of this painting is also known as Josefa de Obidos? Thank you for the links to the sites; they helped me further my knowledge of this piece and were easy to use. I'm glad you were able to find a personal connection to this painting, hopefully, one day, you will have a copy of the painting.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing female artists works, especially when they where painted during a time where women where not seen as equal as men! I wonder how the artist came up with the image? I do love the connection to the Council of Trent, they really did have a big influence!
